Ancient Creature Found in the Waters of Komodo Island Indonesia

An ancient creature was recently discovered in the waters around Komodo Island.--

Its floppy tail and loose skin help Acrochordus granulatus swim and deter predators.

In addition, these snakes have textured scales that help them grip and constrict their prey.

Their heads are unique in that they have a living hole located on top.

This feature allows them to breathe without lifting their heads completely out of the water.

Although they must surface to breathe, the marine file snake's lungs extend throughout its body.

This allows them to stay underwater for hours without surfacing.

Roney also described the marine file snake on Komodo Island, which has rough skin and camouflages itself with its surroundings.

“Its rough skin traps algae, making it appear green and speckled, blending perfectly with the mangrove forest and seagrass,” he said.

Underwater, with its camouflage abilities, Acrochordus granulatus tends to wait for its prey to pass by or come to it. Its usual prey includes small crustaceans, snails, and various types of fish.
