The Discovery of Rafflesia Arnoldi

According to the publication module "Rafflesia - The Enchantment of the World's Largest Flower" published by the Ministry of Environment (Kemenlh), it is explained that one type of Rafflesia flower, the Rafflesia Arnoldi, can reach a width of 110 cm when it blooms.

This enormous size is what amazed Dr. Joseph Arnold, a 19th-century physician, nature lover, and explorer, when he first saw this flower in the interior of Manna, South Bengkulu, in 1818.

Joseph Arnold and his colleague Stamford Raffles first saw this flower blooming on Pulo Lebbar in 1818.

Pulo Lebbar was a place that expeditions of that era could reach within a two-day journey along the Manna River. Today, this area is a village in Pino Raya District, Bengkulu.

The discovery of this flower by Joseph Arnold and Stamford Raffles led to the name Rafflesia Arnoldi. Unfortunately, Joseph Arnold died of malaria during an expedition in the area.
