Dukhan, a Sign of the Apocalypse, Explained by Imams and Scientific Studies

Dukhan, one of the signs of the end of the world in Islamic view.--

INDONESIA, RBTVDISWAY.ID - Another widely discussed sign of the Apocalypse is dukhan. Imam Al-Qurtubi explained the interpretation of dukhan through three opinions.

First, dukhan is interpreted as one of the signs of the Day of Judgment that has not yet occurred. This opinion was expressed by Ali Ibn Abbas, Ibn ‘Amr, Abu Hurairah, Zaid ibn Ali, Al-Hasan, and Ibn Abi Muḥammad.

The second opinion explains dukhan as a delusion that befell the Quraysh during extreme famine. As a result, the people of that era saw a cloud of smoke between heaven and earth. This opinion was expressed by Ibu Mas’ud.

The third opinion on dukhan is that of Abdurrahman Al-A’raj. He explains dukhan as the dust that billowed on the day of the Conquest of Mecca, obscuring the sky.

From these opinions, it can be understood that dukhan can be an apparition in the form of billowing fog or dust, which will appear as a sign of the end of the world. Dukhan or ad-Dukhan is mentioned in a hadith narrated by Imam Thabrani that Rasulullah SAW explained that dukhan would come along with the danger of Dabbah (a kind of reptile that comes out of the bowels of the earth and preys on humans and the Dajjal. These signs are some of the big signs of the Day of Judgment.

This is in accordance with the words of Rasulullah SAW, namely, "Indeed, your Rabb has warned you with three things. (First) Smoke which will cause the believers to feel like fever and to the unbelievers until they blister (burst) and smoke comes out of each ear, the second is animals, the third is the Dajjal." (HR Thabrani)

An explanation of dukhan can also be found in surah Ad Dukhan verses 10-11, namely,

فَارْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِى السَّمَاۤءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِيْنٍ

يَغْشَى النَّاسَۗ هٰذَا عَذَابٌ اَلِيْمٌ

Meaning: "So, wait for the day when the sky will bring a visible haze (which will) cover the (disobedient) people. This is a painful punishment."

Quoted from the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Quranic Tafsir, in this verse, Allah SWT commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to patiently wait for the disbelievers of Mecca to be struck by famine. At the same time, if they look up, they will see a thick haze in the sky. Space.

According to scientific research and studies, the appearance of the "dukhan" (a kind of "darkness") on the Day of Judgment will likely begin with a catastrophic collision between Earth and a celestial body (a planet or other space object).
