In 1941, Hitler appointed himself supreme commander of the German Army, assuming the direct operational role usually held by a German general.

Hitler's political career began with his joining the German Workers' Party (DAP), which later changed its name to the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP).

Hitler then designed a flag featuring a swastika within a white circle on a red background for this party.

Hitler's popularity grew thanks to his outspoken criticism of the Treaty of Versailles, political rivals, and Marxists and Jews.

This was further fueled by the NSDAP's headquarters in Munich, a stronghold of anti-government German nationalists who sought to destroy Marxism and undermine the Weimar Republic.
