Fantastic, Gold Reserves in North Tapanuli Are Second Largest in Indonesia

For example, South Tapanuli Regency boasts the second-largest gold mine in Indonesia after the renowned Freeport gold mine.

However, Martabe Gold Mining, despite being the second largest in Indonesia, has barely made a name for itself as a highly strategic national asset.

The Martabe Gold Mine in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra, is one of the locations with high gold content. In 2022, gold production from the Martabe Mine reached 280,000 ounces.

Not only gold, but silver, copper, and six defined gold mineral deposits have also been discovered.

The gold mining industry in Martabe involves processing gold-bearing rocks through the grinding and stockpiling of gold ore to ultimately yield pure gold.

The Martabe Mine is operated by PT Agincourt Resources and has been in operation since 1997.

This PT is an Indonesian mining company with a policy of supporting local businesses, thus preferring domestic suppliers and contractors for its goods and services.

The gold potential at the Martabe mine reaches 8.05 million ounces, while the silver potential reaches 77 million ounces.

Landsat 8 imagery has been used to map the potential for gold mineralization in South Tapanuli Regency.

The research results indicate that the most extensive gold mineralization potential is found in Batang Toru District, which is also an area with official gold mining activity.

Furthermore, the potential for gold mineralization is spread across seven different districts in South Tapanuli Regency, including Angkola Sangkunur District, Sipirok District, Angkola Timur District, Aekbilah District, Batang Angkola District, and Sayurmatinggi District.
