12 Largest Gold Mines in Indonesia, Total Reserves of 2,600 Tons

Indonesia has many gold mines.--

The Grasberg Block Cave gold mine is managed by PT Freeport Indonesia, a company now majority-owned by the Indonesian government.

In addition to the Grasberg mine, Mimika Regency also houses the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) gold mine, located in the Grasberg district of Papua. The DMLZ mine, also managed by PT Freeport Indonesia, contains 77 million tons of identified minerals and an estimated 305 million tons of undetermined minerals.

These minerals include a combination of gold, silver, and copper.

The urban centers of Freeport's activities in Mimika are Tembagapura and Kuala Kencana.

Gold production from these mines is significant, with Freeport producing approximately 1.9 million ounces of gold per year in 2023.

In addition, the company also produced over 1.6 billion pounds of copper during the same year.

Mining activities in Mimika not only contribute significantly to national gold production but also play a vital role in the local and national economies.

2. Banyuwangi, East Java

The Tujuh Bukit gold mine, also known as the Tumpang Pitu mine, in Banyuwangi, East Java, is one of the largest gold mines in Indonesia.

The mine is located in Sumberagung Village, Pesanggaran District, Banyuwangi Regency, and is managed by PT Bumi Suksesindo (BSI), a subsidiary of PT Merdeka Copper Tbk. PT Bumi Suksesindo operates the Tujuh Bukit Gold Mine under a Mining Operation and Production Business Permit obtained in 2012.

This permit covers 4,998 hectares of land located in a production forest area in Sumberagung Village.

Of this total land area, BSI utilizes only 992 hectares for mining operations. Mining activities at Tujuh Bukit demonstrate how natural resources can be utilized effectively and efficiently, while still adhering to environmental and regulatory aspects.

This mine is one of Indonesia's primary gold sources, contributing significantly to national gold production.

3. Mount Pongkor, Bogor, West Java

Mount Pongkor is one of Indonesia's leading gold-producing areas, managed by the Pongkor Gold Mine (TEP), part of the state-owned enterprise PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam).
