Purpose of Metatah
Hindus believe that every human being is born with demonic traits that will manifest over time and become difficult to control.
Especially in adulthood, these traits will begin to become apparent and cannot be eliminated.
However, it is hoped that they can be controlled and transformed into good qualities.
These demonic traits are the enemies inherent in every human being, known as Sad Ripu, meaning the six enemies.
These enemies consist of kama (lust), loba (greed), mada (intoxication), moha (confusion), krodha (anger), and matsarya (jealousy).
To control these enemies, Hindus perform the Metatah ceremony as a symbol of self-purification.
The six teeth filed in this ceremony also symbolize the six enemies that must be controlled and reduced.
Why is this? Because the traits in Sad Ripu will only lead humans to the brink of destruction. So, it must be controlled so that humans do not fall into the valley of filth and hell.
