Indonesian Coal Threatened with Exhaustion, How Many Remaining Reserves Are There?

It is possible that coal will be available, but its quality will not meet the needs of national electricity. National production control must also take coal quality into account.

Surya Herjuna, Director of Coal Business Development at the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, stated that coal still plays a significant role, both for coal-fired power plants (PLTU) and industry. Furthermore, it's not only an energy source but also a contributor to non-tax state revenue (PNBP).

He added that coal remains the cheapest energy source compared to other types of energy.

Therefore, one of the things being continuously pushed is increasing added value and utilizing coal for power plants with technology that can reduce emissions.

Acting Executive Director of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI), Gita Mahyarani, stated that the coal market is currently challenging due to a significant decline in export demand in early 2025.

Indonesia's coal production in 2025 is also estimated to be lower than in 2024.

Indonesia's coal resources and reserves, which are predominantly low-calorie, require attention. This is because the current abundance of reserves may not match demand or needs, especially for domestic purposes.

However, domestic energy security must be prioritized while preparing for coal adaptation to future needs.
