According to a report from the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in 2021, Indonesia produced 117.5 tons of pure gold. This makes our country the ninth largest gold producer in the world.

1. Mimika, Central Papua

One of the largest gold mines in Indonesia is the Grasberg mine, operated by Freeport.

The Grasberg mine can produce approximately 3 million ounces of gold per year, or approximately 240 kilograms of pure gold per day. Meanwhile, underground gold reserves still amount to approximately 1.76 million tons. In addition to gold, Grasberg contains another highly valuable mineral: uranium.

2. Deep Mill Level Zone, Central Papua

Another Papuan gold mine is the Deep Mill Level Zone, an underground gold mine. Development began in 2016 and is expected to operate until 2040.

While Grasberg is still managed by Freeport, the DMLZ is managed by PT Inalum following the divestment of PT Freeport's shares. Gold production at this mine reached 548,800 ounces in 2021.

3. Mount Pongkor, Bogor

The Mount Pongkor mine is located in Nanggung District, Bogor Regency. This mine is one of the largest gold producers in Indonesia and is managed by PT Aneka Tambang. This gold mine was discovered in 1989 and produces approximately 2 tons per year. This mine is also one of the largest in Indonesia, covering 6,042 hectares.

4. Banyuwangi, East Java

The Tujuh Bukit gold mine in Banyuwangi has been producing gold since 2017. The mine covers 992 square kilometers, with remaining gold reserves of 28 million ounces.
