Besides Grasberg, Papua Indonesia Still Has Gold Mines

Our country ranks 10th with total gold production reaching 100 metric tons (MT) in 2024.

The Grasberg Mine in Papua, a collaboration between Freeport-McMoRan and the Indonesian government, is the largest gold mine in Indonesia, with total production reaching 1.86 million ounces of gold in 2024.

Grasberg is a gold mountain currently under exploration. Currently, mining activities have shifted from surface to underground, resulting in the formation of a very large hole at the Grasberg mine site.

Besides Grasberg, several other gold mountains are also being mined by mining companies in Indonesia.

This demonstrates that the country's mineral resource potential is still vast and has not been fully explored.

1. Grasberg, Papua

Grasberg is located in the Central Mountains, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province.

This area is known as the location of an open-pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia, which is one of the largest gold and copper mines in the world.

This mine is located in the Central Mountains, Mimika, Central Papua, at an altitude of approximately 4,200 meters above sea level (masl).

Since operating in 1988, Grasberg has been one of the most productive mines in the world.

Although the open-pit mine closed in early 2020, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) continues underground mining operations in the area.

This demonstrates the company's commitment to continuously exploiting the resources available at the mine.
