INDONESIA, RBTVDISWAY.ID - A few months ago, a Canadian diver managed to record a species considered rare in the waters off Komodo Island, INDONESIA.
The species is not a fish, but a sea snake that was documented on the seabed with its unique camouflage ability.
The diver, John Roney, shared his observations through an Instagram post. The snake he saw was the marine file snake (Acrochordus granulatus).
“One of the characteristics of my favorite sea snake is its unique camouflage,” he said in a post on his @roneydives account, viewed on Monday (11/17/2025).

An Ancient Species Still Alive
According to Animal Diversity, the marine file snake inhabits waters along the coasts of Southeast Asia, northern Australia, and surrounding islands. This snake can be found at depths of 4 to 20 meters.
Some types of marine file snakes are known to be ancient species that still exist today.
This snake differs from the true sea snake group that lives in the Indo-Pacific Ocean.
The Acrochordus granulatus species is an aquatic animal that breathes using lungs.
To take in air, this ancient snake surfaces, similar to marine mammals.
