Gold Relics from an Ancient Kingdom Buried in Aceh, Indonesia: Here's a Clue to the Location

From the East came the Chinese and Pegu, who played a significant role in the trade of gold and bird's nests.

Many Greek (Roman) and Persian scholars were experts in gold mining. They taught the local people how to extract gold from rivers containing gold.

H.M. Zainuddin, in his book "Tarich Atjeh dan Nusantara" (1961), published by Pustaka Iskandar Muda, Medan, wrote that Peureulak was a region in present-day Aceh whose rivers and streams were known to the Parsians for their gold.

The gold mining site at that time was known as Alue Meuh (Alur Mas), not far from the former palace of the King of Peureulak. The area is now known as Paya Meuligoe.

Numerous kerosene lakes were also found around the palace of the King of Peureulak.

However, very few records exist of the Peureulak Kingdom. It was vaguely known from the 11th century.

However, this only became clear in 1292 after Marco Polo's visit.

Gold mining in Aceh is also recorded in history as having existed in Pase, after the founding of the Pasai Kingdom.

The gold mine was built upstream of the Pasai River, above Kampung Perak. The gold mine was operated by a Persian scholar.

Legend has it that one day, Meurah Silu installed a hole in the Peusangan River.

The hole was washed away by a great flood. After being removed and its contents boiled, gold was found.

The location where Meurah Silu installed the hole was in Krueng Meuh, which is currently located above Awee Geutah, Peusangan Siblah Krueng District, Bireuen.

Authentic evidence of the gold mine in Pasai can be seen in the currency used by the Kingdom.

Sultan Malikussaleh was the only king to begin creating gold currency, called the gold dirham (Pasaiche gouden munten), issued by Sultan Zainal Abidin Bahian Syah and Queen Buhayah. At that time, kings elsewhere were issuing money made from leather and tin.
