Data from the World Gold Council indicates that Indonesia had gold reserves of around 2,600 tons in 2023, ranking it sixth in the world.
However, most of this gold is exported in its raw form and reimported as higher-value finished goods.
The presence of bullion banks is expected to address this problem by providing an alternative for people to own gold accounts with more control.
